This year, it appears that the common cold is truly living up to its name — far too common. I've been caught in the cycle of stuffy noses and sore throats more times than I'd like. I have my list of tea extracts, but I need a quick fix.
So I found myself brainstorming, revisiting old-school remedies that never seem to fail. After some thought, a simple but effective recipe came to mind. A recipe that requires only two things, both of which most of us already have in our kitchen.
Curious? Please keep reading.
Here's the secret to my latest cold-busting recipe: honey and red onion.
Yes, you read that correctly: these two simple pantry staples can help relieve cold symptoms and boost your immune system in no time.
Let me explain how this remedy works and how to make it.
Ingredients
- Good quality organic honey (250-300 mL)
Honey is more than a sweet treat. It contains natural antioxidants, antibacterial properties, and has been used for centuries to treat sore throats and coughs. It's an excellent base for this treatment.
- A medium-sized red onion
Red onions, which are often overlooked in the kitchen, are high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making them a powerful immune booster. Their anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties are beneficial when fighting off a cold.
How To Make It 🧐
1. Prepare the onion
Begin by dicing a medium-sized red onion. You want to make sure it's finely chopped so the honey can fully absorb its healing properties.
2. Mix with Honey
Place the chopped onion in the jar with the honey. Stir thoroughly to ensure the onion is evenly coated. The combination of the sharp, slightly sweet onion and the thick, soothing honey makes the ideal cold-fighting combination.
3. Let It Rest
Place the lid on the jar and refrigerate for a few hours or overnight. The longer it sits, the more the onion's juices seep into the honey. The resulting mixture will have a strong, unusual smell, but don't let that deter you — this is where the magic happens.
4. How to Use
Once the concoction is ready, take a tablespoon three times per day to relieve your cold symptoms. Honey coats the throat, while onion boosts the immune system and reduces inflammation. You will feel better after the first dose, but continue to take it for at least two days.
Kids' Version
If your child refuses to eat a spoonful of honey infused with onions (*admit, you too were one of those kids), there's a simple solution. Instead of chopping the red onion, just squeeze it out and pour it into the honey. The taste becomes less intense, and children are more likely to accept it without complaint.
It is good for cold prevention 💡
If you want to avoid getting a cold rather than treat it, the remedy also works as a preventative measure. A tablespoon per day is enough to keep your immune system in top shape.
Why Does This Work so Fast?
Honey and red onions are natural immune boosters. Honey, with its antimicrobial and soothing properties, helps to relieve throat irritation, whereas red onion has antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties. They work together to provide a two-pronged approach to combating cold symptoms and improving overall immune health. Red onions are high in quercetin (the secret weapon of great health; see my post about it).
Consider honey to be a cozy blanket for your throat, while red onion serves as a fiery defender, clearing away the bad stuff and assisting your body in fighting off the cold before it takes hold.
🆒
Bonus points!
This concoction is your all-in-one beauty fix: a body scrub, face exfoliator, and hair mask (leave it on for 20 minutes for maximum magic). Then, hop into a hot shower to steam away that cold and steam in a glow-up.
*Ditch the onion and swap it for a dash of olive or coconut oil.
Clear sinuses, clearer skin, and shinier hair – what more could you ask for?
Final Word
So, if you get the sniffles, reach for this two-ingredient solution— it might just be the quick fix you need to feel like yourself again in no time.
Try it and let me know if it works as well for you as it did for me. Here's to a healthier and happier cold season!
