Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AKG): The Molecule You Need For A Long, Healthy Life
Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) may sound like a sci-fi villain, yet this small molecule is a powerhouse in your body, silently orchestrating a metabolic symphony you've probably never even thought about. Think of it as the overlooked hero of cellular processes or the quiet achiever who’s finally getting the recognition it deserves.
What is the mysterious AKG doing exactly?
It serves as an intermediary in the Krebs cycle (also known as the citric acid cycle), which is the primary source of cellular energy. Simply said, it plays an important role in converting the food you eat into usable energy.
It is a nitrogen scavenger and a source of glutamate and glutamine that stimulates protein synthesis and inhibits protein degradation in muscles. AKG as a precursor of glutamate and glutamine is a central metabolic fuel for cells of the gastrointestinal tract as well.
AKG Health Benefits
➡️ Enhanced Cognitive Function: Say goodbye to brain fog! Some studies suggest AKG might be a cognitive enhancer, improving focus and memory.
Students, busy parents, and perimenopausal women, take note!
➡️ Potential Anti-Aging Properties: AKG might help combat oxidative stress, a major contributor to aging. It is also a collagen booster.
➡️ Keeping Immune System Homeostasis: AKG is also known as the immune nutrition factor, and it plays a crucial part in general immune metabolism.
Protects the Heart, Liver, and Kidneys: AKG helps protect the heart, liver, and kidneys by supporting their metabolism and reducing stress caused by toxins or injury. It improves energy production, reduces inflammation, and helps prevent cell damage. AKG also supports the function of these organs by balancing oxidative stress and enhancing repair processes, promoting overall health and resilience in these vital organs.
Anticancer Agent: When tumors grow, they create low-oxygen areas, which trigger factors that help the tumor spread and grow new blood vessels. AKG may help fight cancer by reversing the effects of low oxygen in tumors and restoring proper cell function.
➡️ mRNA shot ADE’s fighter: People who have received mRNA vaccines must ensure that they consume food containing this molecule since it combats various ADEs.
➡️ Bones Protector: AKG promotes bone tissue growth and have protective effect against osteoporosis.
➡️ Improved Muscle Growth and Recovery: Think of it as a personal trainer for your muscles, optimizing protein synthesis and reducing muscle soreness. Perfect for post-workout aches.
➡️ Healthy Metabolism Support: As a key player in the Krebs cycle, AKG helps your body efficiently convert food into energy. It’s the ultimate metabolism-boosting sidekick.
Athletes take note: AKG is your molecule since it can help you perform significantly better without being accused of cheating because it is a natural molecule that can be obtained from food (more on this below).
Where to Find the AKG (Naturally)
You do not need a lab coat or a Bunsen burner to get your AKG fix. This metabolic miracle is naturally found in foods high in protein and glutamate, therefore a carnivore diet will help you get it (sorry vegans and vegetarians).
In which foods AKG is the most concentrated?
➡️ Bone Broth
➡️ Meat Especially Organ Meats: Liver and kidneys are AKG powerhouses.
➡️ Fish (salmon, tuna).
➡️ Dairy (cheese, yogurt).
➡️ Okay, vegetarians and vegans can get it naturally, but must consume plenty of spinach, kale, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts.
What about supplements?
You can find various AKG supplements. Please read this before buying any.

Great article, I'll certainly include more organ meats into my diet. Funny tho many people don't like eating liver, I liked them since I was a child. Also liver dumplings were ok for me.
Why do the filtering organs contain so much goodness, as they perform the dirty jobs? A lot of people have an aversion, particulary younger people, but you've provided a variety of sources.
